What does “neurodivergent” mean?

The term “neurodivergent” was coined in the late 1990s by sociologist Judy Singer who has autism. This refers to the fact that many developmental “disorders” are, in fact, normal variations of the brain. While the umbrella is still growing, neurodiversity is typically used in reference to: autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADHD, and other learning disorders. While other umbrella has been expanding to potentially include other disorders such as anxiety, schizophrenia, and PTSD, there is no standardized definition of the term at this time. However, the general belief is that neurodiversity is distinct from mental illness.

When it comes to the conference, we will not be policing a specific definition of neurodiversity, though the conference topics are centered around things related to ASD, ADHD, and similar conditions, and as the science changes, we will do our best to update our understanding.

Do I need to be neurodivergent to attend the conference?

No. We are happy to welcome neurotypical people to the conference if you feel the content here may be of use to you. However, please recognize that the space is designed for and by neurodivergent people and respect that this content may not necessarily be for you. If you would like to attend the conference to learn more about neurodiversity or network, you are welcome to do so.

Will the talks be available to watch later if I miss something I really want to see?

Yes! We intend on uploading all of our talks to YouTube (link will be made available when we get closer to the event). Attendees will have exclusive access for two weeks before we make them available to the public for viewing. Conference attendance provides you access to the live sessions and networking activities. Those who cannot afford to attend will still be able to watch presentations and access the Facebook group and Discord server.
